Or maybe a little 3-legged cow for a sidekick. You could call him Hop-along Calfidy.

I do think that if you decide to go with the bale of hay, that it should have sass. I don't think a submissive bale of hay would make for a very good role model. That is usually how they are portrayed in cinema and I believe it's time to change that stereotype.

Tractors would not socialize with bales of hay.
Sheeze!
Tractors would socialize with other tractors.
Maybe some of those other tractors would have attitude or sass.
You know, like those gay locomotives the boys play with --- what are their names? --- Simon, Theodore and Alvin, er, uh, no, maybe Thomas, Percy, Oliver and Peter Sam. Ever notice their lips never move? What's up with that? What are they, ventriloquists?
Now remember, when you write your book or do your animated screenplay, no wussie names for tractors. “Hitch Cowslip” is questionable at best. I'm thinken some manly names like GRONK, or STONER or THOR maybe LIGHTNING or SPEED or HUMP or BUMP or THUMP. Are there women tractors? Hmmmmmm... Probably. If there are, what kind of names would they have? STAR, BRUNHILDA (Maybe Brunny for short) then there would be HELGA and MUSCLEMARY and maybe MAYBELINE and ANNABELLE.
And let’s be sure their lips move when they talk.
The supporting cast would, I assume, be made up of plows, cultivators, manure spreaders, corn harvesters, hay rakes, wagons, brush hogs and the like.
Well, let’s get going, I am anxious to read the first draft.
