Great memoir. Have you read "The Glass Castle: A Memoir" by Jeannette Walls? If not, you should. She writes about childhood memories. I've read a bit of Nabokov and Joan Didian... whom I think you'll love as well, if you have never read them. I'm curious to try those tomatoes. :-) V

What a beautiful, well written post. I found my site listed in Alltop this weekend. I didn't know what it was so I went to check it out. I found your site, and poked around for a bit. I read this post and it stuck with me. I just read it again and subscribed. Thank you, happy Monday, and have a great week.

Jill,

Your writing is poetry in motion. I just had to read this one again. It is genius stuff and you are a great momma too.

Thanks for sharing and helping to resurrect memories of "bringing down" my own Nanna's front porch swing with all sorts of high flying tricks!

Lots of love...

Hi. Thank-you for sharing that slice of time with us. I spent many summers with my grandparents in the country. I am sure they never realized the extent to which those times shaped me, nourished me and gave me a deeper perpsective of simple values.

"watch Gram slice the still-warm-from-the-sun tomatoes into thick, red slabs"

Beautiful.

And more than that, I can sing every word of that song, as she and I sang it endlessly. (tunelessly too!)

Jill that was BEAUTIFUL!!

I can feel my Nana as I laid down next to her in the double bed in the "country"...

Warm tomatoes, shucking corn, snapping green beans...barn kitties, the back of the pick up truck..

Things seemed so simple..
